We’ve seen some pretty awful movies this year. There was the truly horrible The Smurfs. The painfully unfunny, and like with any bit of binge drinking, truly regrettable Hangover 2.

But the film to surpass all shitty films since the beginning of time was Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star – a film so bad that it didn’t even get 1% on Rotten Tomatoes, and you know any film is truly woeful when the best review is this: “one feels nothing more strongly than an acute sympathy for all involved” Variety.

But let’s not go on about truly shitty films that made a few dollars at the box office that’s up to the Oscars 2012 judges. We know they are bad. Lets look at the ones that were the best Films of the year and conned the Oscar judges to giving them a gong. So which are the worst Oscar Best Picture winners of the last 30 years?

Dennis Hopper – the movie legend has died of cancer. Multi-talented and unconventional actor/director regarded by many as one of the true “enfant terribles” of Hollywood who has led an amazing cinematic career for more than five decades. (IMDB)

One of my most favourite scenes in a great movie which itself had enough memorable scenes and talented stars to fuel a half a dozen blockbusters – The Film True Romance – with that scene, the Walken/Hopper scene in the trailer where Hopper questions Walken’s (the Sicilian)  heritage and ascendancy, alone is worth the `price of admission’

We salute you Dennis Hopper

Cemetery Junction

Having had the luxury of growing up in Reading, this new film from Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, Cemetery Junction obviously appeals. However, I would just like to point out Reading is not a small town, as every review seems to state, and the Cemetery Junction pictured in this films looks positively idyllic (I think it’s meant to be a made up place) in comparison to the Cemetery Junction I grew up with and I’m pretty sure it was very much the same in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s too. I guess that’s what artistic licence truly is! From the trailers and reviews I’ve seen I can’t wait to watch it!

It’s your average Tuesday night’s TV line-up which, until the new series of Desperate Housewives graces our screens is, let’s face it, pretty mundane. So what do you do? You swivel the computer screen to a more comfortable angle and settle down for a nice dose of Skins on 4OD, Life on BBC’s iPlayer, or maybe even XFactor repeats on ITVPlayer? Or perhaps you’ll decide to watch a movie through your Xbox? Today, the choices are vast.

Haven’t we come far since the days of watching repeats or video recordings when nothing half decent was on! Remember how organised we used to have to be? Take Christmas for example…  I remember the days when come December 1st you bought a TV-Times and went through with a highlighter to mark out all the films and dramas that weren’t to be missed; and when Christmas dinner had to be scheduled so as not to miss Eastenders. Now all you’ve got to do is press pause on the Sky+, or one simple red button for record, and voila! the Mitchells will wait for you!

The boxing day sports didn’t cause the arguments they usually do this year either; well, the guys did win the living room, but the gals and kids certainly weren’t left with nothing. With Sky Player to the rescue, we happily cuddled up on the bed and watched a movie on the laptop; everyone was happy!

I now find myself grateful for this new commodity once again, as cricket season is always upon us which means the OH can get his fix at work without having to burden me with the likes of “If only I had seen that last wicket!” and such. Oh yes, I’m very grateful for all of these advances in technology. Just think what we’ll be able to do next Christmas… I predict the dwindling of our having separate TVs and computers, but instead having one super machine that can do it all- including washing the dishes!

If you want to read more about advances in VOD and how we look set to entertain ourselves in the future,  there’s some intriguing nuggets of info in this recent article from The Guardian.

Top 50 Paid Hollywood Actors!  Tom Hanks $3.5 BILLION!!! What’s worse is Eddie Murphy is second! $3.4 BILLION! Can you imagine having that much money?! Followed by Harrison Ford, Robin Williams and Tom Cruise. Can’t say I believe them to be the world’s finest actors, but they are certainly prolific. On another note- according to Forbes Will Ferrell and British actor Ewan McGregor head the list of Hollywood’s most overpaid stars.
Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey also made the top 10 list of actors who cost more to hire than they appear to be worth at the box office. It saddens me Ewan’s been a flop, but hopefully we won’t have to endure another Will Ferrell film with the same plot as the last!
